Zakaria Chikh as was his actual name was born on April 12th, 1908 in Beni Yezguen (Ghardaia) in one family of Rostomide descent. He studied in Annaba then in Tunis where he learnt to use both Arabic and French in the Khaldounia and then the Attarine schools.
During his stay in Tunis, he met and became a friend of Abi al yaqdhan and Ramdhane Hamoud.
Once back in DZ, he joined the North African Muslim Students Associations and was close to the Associations of the Algerian Muslim Oulemas.
He was a member of the North African Starand then the Algerian People's Party for which he composed the hymn (Fida' Aljazair)
In 1937, the French administration jailed him together with Messali ElHadj and released him in 1939. Once free, he helped to create the PPA's "ach-cha3b" journal.
Between 1940 and 1948 he has been jailed many times for almost 4 years. When he was freed, he joined the MTLD and joined the Algerian revolution in 1955.
The French arrested him again in April 1956 and he spent 3 years in Serkaji. At his release, he went to Morocco then Tunisia where he wrote in El moujahid newspaper.
Moufdi Zakaria is the poet of the Algerian Revolution and is most known for the Algerian national hymn which he wrote. He also has two famous groups of poetry named 'allahab al mouqaddass' and 'ilyadat aljazair'.
He died on August 17th, 1977 in Tunis.
